The Blasphemy Returns
In Aeternum
Sweden has a tradition in extreme Metal styles. Since the coming of BATHORY on the 80s, and the invasion of Death Metal bands as CARNAGE, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, UNLEASHED, HYPOCRISY and many others, the deep roots of extreme Metal styles gave birth to many excellent names. DISSECTION, MARDUK, OPHTHALAMIA and others were the following generation. So, to hear a work from IN AETERNUM is nothing unexpected, but always a good experience. "The Blasphemy Returns" is new release, a four-track EP.
Their main insight is that filthy, raw and aggressive between Death and Black Metal in an Old School format. But they are an ancient band, so don't ask from them something extremely modern, because you won't get such a thing. But they have that Swedish Extreme Metal scent, that main feature that turns their work really charming. The technical level is good, and their songs are powerful and full of raw energy, so everything is really fine. By my words, you could think that the sound quality would be as raw as Hell. But you're wrong. It is really oppressive and with tunes in the Old School way, but there's a level of clarity that allow us all to understand what they are doing, and to absorb their musical message easily.
These Swedish blasphemers are back and hungry for blood, and they are excellent the way they are. "Wolfpack" is brutal and filled with very good tempo changes (from fast moments to slow ones, showing a great work from bass guitar and drums); "Stench of Victory" is Death/Black Metal pile driver, showing excellent guitars; on "Majesty of Fire" is showing a raw and bitter insight due the slow tempos in some parts, and the hooking guitar work, as well as the vocals are excellent with these shrieked tunes; and "I Am Elite" is a personal version of the quartet for an old hymn from WAR, another excellent Swedish band, and their version is excellent, respecting the original, but putting their own personality on it.
Welcome back, IN AETERNUM, and keep spreading your massage of chaos and death. And I just can't wait for their new album!
