When "Old School" terms comes out of the blue into a discussion about Metal/Rock, the best thing do is to define them from what time you're speaking about. Old School doesn't mean that you're trying to live in the 80's, because there are more bands going into the past, and some prefer to go to the end of the 60's and beginning of the 70's to create music. And this is the case from the Calgary (Alberta) quartet GONE COSMIC. The album "Sideways in Time" is a travel back to the days when hippies walked the Earth.

Their music is based on the proto form of Rock that would become Metal and Hard Rock in the middle of the 70's, with that strong influence from Blues and throwing an abrasive form of groove in the brains of the listeners. Their melodies are easy to be assimilated, turn their songs into something that is accessible, despise of the greasy ambiance given by the guitar and bass guitar tunes. And although their songs aren't presenting something that wasn't heard before and it still has a lot to evolve, they're on the right path. The production created a good sound quality, able to deal with the musical ideas from the quartet, to express the organic feeling that they wanted, but with a very good level of clearness, for the fans to understand what they are playing. It's far of being perfect, but it's good in the way it is.

The psychedelic and organic feeling that fills their songs is very good, but the talent of songs like "Dazed" (distorted and strong, with good guitar riffs), "Siren" (fine contrast between their noir parts and the nasty moments with the introspective parts, always keeping the raw ambiance from the beginning to its end), "Turbulent" (a fine song with its very good technical work, and lovely melodies), and "Bear the Weight" show that the quartet has musical talent, but needs to evolve some more. They have talent, but what they show on "Sideways in Time" that they have to evolve some more to face the great names of their music genre.
