Parallel Dimensions
George Gakis
The ways to play AOR (or Melodic Rock, or call it as you want, for dealing with labels is always boring) are endless, and some artists prefer to get in the more Pop-orientated way, the way that earned many acts commercial praise and success in the 80's (remember how good and Pop-orientated sounds "No Easy Way Out", of Robert Tepper, that famous song of "Rocky IV" soundtrack, for it's a very good example). But remember: unlike many old fashioned Metalheads like to think and say, it doesn't mean that the music isn't good (sometimes, as they preach their rules, you can be sure that the music they insult is great). And George Gaki's "Parallel Dimensions" is a fine example of how the genre still has a lot to offer. The album depicts moments when things are into a Brian Adams and Michael Bolton's way (as heard on "Insane"), or sometimes in a heavier format ("Everything You Want" depicts such thing clearly, and even with a modern touch), and acts as WINGER, JOURNEY, BON JOVI and others can come to mind if one is looking for a referential frame to compare with.
But no one can deny the quality of the album, the music is full of many melodic hooks, and choruses that are easy to learn (and hard to forget), and always with an undoubted quality. It's really a lovely album, indeed. "Parallel Dimensions" was mixed by Justin Cortel, and mastered by Joe Nino Hernes, and with the helping hand of Kip Winger on the production of the vocals. And as expected, the album's sonority is amazing, clean and defined, but there are moments with a clear heavier direction into Hard Rock (what means that the distortion increases). A great work, indeed.
George is a known figure into Rock scene of Greece, and releases albums since 1989 (the year of the release of his first album, "Keep On Rock 'n' Rollin'"), and his activities are not only on making music. So expect a homogeneous album in the view of quality of the songs, so it's not easy to say that one or other song can be said as a 'best one', because this released was designed to be a collection of hits. But for a first time on it, try to stay cold as songs as "Insane" (a deep and melodic song with a silk appeal, where George's voice is laid on an excellent instrumental sheath), "Everything You Want" (a more distorted and Hard Rock-orientated song, with weighty guitars and m modern groove on its melodies), "Who Made You A Woman?" (a song with contrasts between heavier parts and introspective moments, but always with a strong work of bass guitar and drums on the rhythmic layers of the song), "Nightmare Dreamer" (another moment with a heavier outfit contrasting with tender silk moments, and what lovely and elegant melodies), "Fake" (a frantic and hooking Hard Rock moment, and it's hard to keep stopped to its melodic appeal), "Parallel Dimensions" (another moment when things are filled with a modern outfit and weight), "Some Other Man Will" (another catchy mix between AOR and Hard Rock elements, and plenty of Rock 'n' Roll nasty touches), and "In the Name of Rock 'n' Roll". Surely the hearers won't.
"Parallel Dimensions" is really a fine piece of music, and it shows as George Gakis still has many lessons to give to younger generations
