Fustilarian - All This Promiscuous Decadence album cover

Black Metal can be resumed in three important points of its history: the creation of VENOM's hands in the late 70's, the revolution done by BATHORY on "Under the Sign of the Black Mark" and SARCÓFAGO on "I.N.R.I" in 1987, and the consolidation done by MAYHEM in the late years of the 80's. Of course many other bands and musicians made their contributions, but these three moments define what the genre is today. Everything heard and seen come from their creations, so having in mind these points, is easy to hear and understand a work as "All This Promiscuous Decadence", of the Portuguese one man band FUSTILARIAN.

Based on a traditional form of Black Metal that resembles what was done by bands as DARKTHRONE during "A Blaze in the Northern Sky" to "Total Death" age and MAYHEM on the days of "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" (a compendium of what Black Metal means). Technically easy, crude and cold as the genre was on its past (in the days when a great part of the Metalheads feared to hear it), the work presented by D is simple and don't present anything different from what was already done, but the way things are proposed on the songs are personal, from aggressive nasty parts to introspective and funereal moments. And yes, it's good. Diogo Santana did the recording, mixing and mastering of the album, having in mind something that could present the songs in a crude and organic form (as it was usual on the first half of the 90's). Of course things could be better in many aspects, but for a Black Metal work in such vein, it's very good (understanding that there are bands that make things in a way impossible to understand).

The nasty and brutal approach used on "Born in Neglect Embrace" (very good vocals, reminding the expressions used by Attila Csihar on the past), the darkened ambience of the slow parts of "Irreversible Cessation" (very good guitars), the funeral and bitter feeling that flows from the harmonies of "Swallowed by the Nether Regions of Chaotic Isolation" and the traditional Black Metal outfit of "Carving Crystal Adornments upon the Flesh" are moments that will be joyful for Old School Black Metal fans.

But "All This Promiscuous Decadence" is just the beginning, so let's hope that FUSTILARIAN can come back with another work as soon as possible (but D can explore his talent a bit more, because it's not small).
