The label 'Gothic Metal' sometimes sounds as it doesn't make any sense. Let me explain: the bands that are labeled like that don't share any musical element with Gothic Rock and its genres. The melancholic insight used by Metal band differs a lot from Pop Rock melancholic scent of Gothic Rock names, and Metal doesn't share other musical elements aren't presented on works of bands as JOY DIVISION, THE MISSION, THE 69 EYES, BAUHAUS, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM or THE SISTERS OF MERCY. Sorry for the creators of this, but just to record a version for "Enjoy the Silence" or "Bela Lugosi's Dead", or saying that you love these bands doesn't mean that your music has elements of Gothic Rock. Maybe a hearing on those names and on the work of the Austrian quartet EXIT TO EDEN could open your eyes, because the EP "Love and Other Nightmares" could show you.

They call themselves as Gothic 'n' Roll, what can make sense if the fans could hear the dirty Rock 'n' Roll influence in many points, as well as the adrenaline that Punk Rock showed back on the 70's and 80's (an early influence for Post Punk, the proto form from where Gothic Rock came). Their music can sound electric in some moments, or more melancholic, but it's always very tasteful and really charming, and besides the technical level isn't so high as many could think (due the Gothic Metal fallacy explained above), their music is not so simple. And yes, it's really great to hear such form of music.

The sound quality of the EP is really very good, and for Gothic Rock fans, it can sound as an evolution from what many bands of the past used on their albums. It's clean and abrasive, but it bears that rough essential touch that Gothic Rock releases usually show. For those used to technical works, "Love and Other Nightmares" could sound a bit repetitive, because they aren't playing 10*exp(23) notes per second, but their music has a charming appeal, as heard on "Goth n Roll Head" (very good and simple guitar riffs), the Gothic/Punk energy that flows from "Love at First Hate" (the simple and solid work from bass guitar and drums is very good), on the somber and accessible melancholic outfit of "Without That Pain" (one of the best moments of the vocals on the entire EP), and the ironic Rock 'n' Roll touch used on "Bad Day" are the right ones to know their work.

The band's musical work isn't 'Gothically' orthodox, and EXIT TO EDEN really has a personal appeal. Listen to "Love and Other Nightmares" and make your own conclusions.
