Hymns for Wilderness
Dust Mountain
During the years of the 60's, a lot of different transcendental experiences and ideas that the Flower-Power movement entered the universe of music, creating some expressions that were protests against a whole conservative paradigm. The lysergic experiences that brood Folk Rock were a call for getting back to the harmonic life with nature, a call to praise Mother Earth (what caused despair to Christian conservative sects, especially into neo Pentecostal trends). And the genre is rising again on Finland, and DUST MOUNTAIN is one of their good names, as can be heard on "Hymns for Wilderness".
The band's music is based on a form of Folk/Progressive Rock that takes references from names as JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and RENAISSANCE, but with clear traces of Krautrock (maybe a consequence of the experience of the members with bands as ORANSSI PAZUZU, DEATH HAWKS, and DARK BUDDHA RISING), creating a dynamical form of music that brings to the fans a different experience, a voyage through a filthy and Folk landscaping ambiences. And it's really very good. The production of "Hymns for Wilderness" is focused on making things harsh and organic, but without creating peaks of despair on the fans by tearing apart the tender ambiences of the music. It's an unusual sound quality for such form of music, but it works in great shape.
The band offers 7 very good songs that can bring a mix of sensations and ideas, but it's not a hard album to deal with. And the filthy and organic approach on the tender ambiences of "Harvest Maiden" (very good work of bass guitar and guitars), the deeper and introspective approach heard on "Under My Spell" and "Margaret" (full of very good and spontaneous arrangements), the lysergic and Progressive Rock energy of "Village on Fire" (very good vocals), the catchy silky melodies based on abrasive tunes of "Holy Equinox" and "Apollo" (this one is really filthy, and with good arrangements on organ and drums), and "Bird Hymns" with its nasty and melodic appeal, will give the fans a different (yet very good) insight on music.
DUST MOUNTAIN is really welcome, and "Hymns for Wilderness" will cause despair to the puritans, conservatives and asses that are into the Rock scene.
