Dödsrit - Mortal Coil album cover

People seems to forget to say that the Swedish Black Metal scene was a great driving force in the first half of the 90's, and that many great names came from there. Obviously, few know the names of OPHTHALAMIA, VONDUR, SWORDMASTER, INFERNAL and others, but the names of MARDUK, DISSECTION and LORD BELIAL are well known. Of course the genre is still strong there, and the name of DÖDSRIT walks the path of the ancients, as can be heard on "Mortal Coil".

The quartet uses a dirty and traditional musical approach on Black Metal (inherited from Crust), but bearing the melodic aesthetics that is traditional from Black/Death Metal School from Sweden. So they band uses an old formula, but the way they do the things is their own, a particular set of ideas that turns their work something that speaks directly with the hearts of the listeners. And yes, it's really very good. The production is really old fashioned in terms of Swedish Death/Black Metal: a raw insight using a defined embodiment for their songs. Explaining: it's rough and rude, but in a way that anyone can understand the band's musical expression. Maybe a better set of tunes in the future could improve things, but is fine for now.

It's not easy to choose what their best moments are, because "The Third Door", "Shallow Graves", "Mortal Coil" and "Apathetic Tongues" are filled with excellent musical ideas, some nasty and darkened melodies (with a bitter sad set of ambiences) that contrasts with the massive aggressive parts that their instrumental work and nasty shirked voices they unleash. It's a very good experience both for younger extreme Metal fans as for those experienced on the genre.

"Mortal Coil" is a very good release, but DÖDSRIT transcends what is heard on it. So let's hope the quartet can evolve even more, because they can become a driving force in the Swedish Extreme Metal scene soon.
