Disembodiment - Mutated Chaos album cover

The beginning for bands after the rising of a genre is a very hard time, because, due the competition, you have to evolve in a faster way than the pioneers. It means that a new band trying to play any genre of Metal the readers can think of will be constantly under a heavy pressure. But even in this way, some neophytes make something good, as the Canadian quartet DISEMBODIMENT with their first release, the EP called "Mutated Chaos".

They play in a form that seems to be a midterm between what some labels as Brutal Death Metal (due the extreme low grunts used) with Old School Death Metal aspects (when they play a bit faster, it can remind NAPALM DEATH on "Harmony Corruption" days). Of course they seem to be still building their musical work, the reason for some lacks of completeness in some songs, but they play aggressive and nasty, with a massive dose of energy. Yes, they still have a long way to go, but they're on the right path. The sonority that was constructed by the hands of Xavier Berthiaume (who did the mixing and mastering of the songs) is good, because it tries to align a sense of clarity (to allow the listeners to understand what's being done by the quartet) with the natural aggressiveness of Death Metal. It's good, indeed, but some instrumental tunes could be better.

Of course, many bands did previously something similar to what is heard on the EP. But the quartet offers on "Ceaseless Discharge" (good contrasts between fast and slow parts), "Transcendent Upheaval of Unholy Graves" (a massive weight comes from the guitar riffs, and the slow rhythm make things heavier), "Mephitic Gunk of Putrified Limbs" (short and abrasive with slow tempos), "Sickening Abominations Terrorizing at Night" (that shows good grunts contrasting with the guitars), and "Below the Mind of Morbidity" a good work that is really promising.

DISEMBODIMENT, as said above, needs to evolve a bit more and to sharpen their musical ideas. But "Mutated Chaos" is proof that they have something good to offer, so let's hope the future will make them mature in the right way.
