Desultory - Into Eternity (Reissue) album cover

In the 80's, USA's Death Metal scene polarized many attentions, but it's due to the releases of albums. But as the genre was 'reborn' (it was said dead until 1989 due many bands changing from Death Metal to Thrash Metal on 1986), the axis became more democratic, with bands from England and (especially) Sweden releasing albums that became cornerstones of the new Death Metal generation. On Sweden, ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER and UNLEASHED earned a lot respect due their first albums, but there were very good names that helped to set the structural foundations of the genre. DESULTORY was one of them. And this new release of their first album, "Into Eternity", depicts it clearly.

Released in 1993, the album shows the same traditional structural form of Swedish Death Metal (plenty of influences of Thrash Metal mixed with early Hardcore of the 80's), filthy and brutal. But the personal appeal of the band can be felt on all the songs, showing the same seminal energy of albums as "Left Hand Path" and "Like An Evenflowing Stream", but not as a carbon copy. The band shows a mighty and aggressive energy, mixed with a good technical insight that turns the album a very good experience for the ears of Death Metal maniacs. The album was produced and engineered by the hands of Tomas Skogsberg (yes, the same one who worked with ENTOMBED, AMORPHIS, DISMEMBER, AT THE GATES and many others), so the sonority can be said as that 'trademark' one of Swedish Death Metal acts, but with a drier approach, enabling the band to build a brutal work, but with a very good definition. And Matti Kärki (DISMEMBER's singer) made the backing vocals on "Depression".

The album sounds primitive and full of energy, and with a personal approach that shows their potential. And songs as "Into Eternity" (abrasive and fast, it's in a typical Swedish Death Metal song based on a very good work of the guitars and vocals), "Depression" (on this one, a melodic sense guides the band to create a very good set of contrasts on the rhythms, and it means that bass guitar and drums are working in a great way), "The Chill Within" (a chaotic and 'hardcorized' and simple song that is full of energy), "Twisted Emotions" (another very good set of tempos, but in a simple way, where influences of DEATH and CELTIC FROST can be detected), "Forever Gone" (the slow moments on this one evokes that bitter ambiences that are usual for Death Metal acts, and what great vocals and guitars), and "Asleep" are the right ones for a first time on the album.

Even now, "Into Eternity" sounds in a great way, a courageous album that still today shines for Death Metal fans. So get your copy and enjoy this offering done by DESULTORY.
