III: Oracles and Tentacle
Delyria
When people deal with a Metal genre that is a mix between two (or more) other genres, some perception is that you listen to one or to the other, and not for a mix. The idea will rest on the experience and knowledge of the listener, so don't be angry if things are unclear sometimes, for it takes time and endless experiences with different bands to have a proper understanding. On Death/Thrash Metal, things are far complicated sometimes, because the doses of one and other can confuse things (because Thrash Metal and Death Metal are extremely near of each other). So to deal with Italian quintet DELYRIA isn't so simple, as heard on "III: Oracles and Tentacles". As the words above denounce, they're a Death/Thrash Metal band that tries to balance things in a 45% Death Metal and 65% Thrash Metal model. It means that they use a violent Thrash Metal set of elements on the instrumental parts (even with a very good technical care on the arrangements) in the vein that SLAYER used during "Reign in Blood" and "Seasons in the Abyss" days with guttural snarls, screams and guitar leads linked to Death Metal (as DEICIDE and other North American acts).
But don't take the wrong idea, because the quintet has a strong personality, sharpened by their experience as a band. It's full of energy and aggressive, but done with a careful insight on the genre, so be prepared. The production worked in a way to bring their musical work to a ferocious and brutal edge into Death/Thrash Metal, with nasty and aggressive instrumental tunes, but always having in mind that the listeners must understand what is being musically expressed. And one can say that the final result is really very good, indeed.
The album is a massive flow of energy that can satisfy any extreme Metal genres fan, for it's a massive artifact of breaking necks' aggressiveness. But for a first visit on the Italian earthquakers, take a bit on "The Glyph" (massive and technical guitar riffs are laying on a solid and great work of bass guitar and drums, indeed), "Irreligious Fallout" (this one bears a lot of Old School Thrash Metal elements, with some groove elements, especially on the hooks and chorus, and what very good vocals), "Serpents in Your Churches" (another song with Old School Death/Thrash Metal-like elements, but with the drums releasing and amazing energy with its technical approach), "Book of Nihil" (some Death Metal traits here are similar to young traditional Death Metal bands, and what killing great guitar riffs), "Republic of the Obscene" (another moment where traditional Death Metal elements with an actual outfit appear, with grunts and snarls fitting on the excellent instrumental parts), and "Gazmasked Reaper".
Yes, DELYRIA released a torpedo that's aiming for your ears. So let "III: Oracles and Tentacles" do its job, and you won't regret it!
