Dead Soul Alliance - Spiralling to Lunacy album cover

Even with Metal genres evolving and bringing fresh approaches to them, some bands prefer an Old School Metal appeal on their works. Of course such thing can be done, because no one needs to fit in a model, but playing on Old School Metal forms can be hard, because to express your own ideas in such ways isn't a simple thing to be done. But some surprises always appear, as the Canadian duet called DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE, as can be heard on "Spiralling to Lunacy". The music of the band is based on an Old School Death/Black Metal form, the same one that SARCÓFAGO started and that influenced a lot the Second waves of Death Metal and Death Metal: fast, brutal and putrid to the core.

But even without creating something new, the music of the band is filled with a massive energy and a personal approach, what means that this album will conquer many fans, because it's massive and extreme hooks are hard to resist to. The sound quality of "Spiralling to Lunacy" is likely the music of the band: raw, nasty and brutal. But everything was done in a form that the fans will listen to the music and understand what's being expressed without problems. And it fits on what the band needs for its songs.

For extreme Metal fans, the work of DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE is something that needs to be heard, and all the songs are really very good. But for the ones that aren't used to the band's music, the better ones for a beginning are "The Demons that Be" (a fast and brutal song, with very good rhythm contrasts created by bass guitar and drums), "Spiralling to Lunacy" (another fast and brutal song, again with very good rhythmic shifts, but the grunts of the vocals are very good, filing all the spaces), "Silencing the Masses" (a shorter and slower song, with bitter ambiences created by the excellent guitar arrangements), "Products of Pain" (one more that is filled with fast rhythms, but with charming extreme hooks), and the oppressive and nasty "Freedom of Death". But after the first experience, this album becomes and addiction.

It's clear that DEAD SOUL ALLIANCE still has more potential to be turned into music. And "Spiralling to Lunacy" is really a great proof of these words.
