Dead Friends - High Wasted Genes album cover

The younger and modern Metal/Rock genres are disgusting to many old fans, but the young ones are able to understand and assimilate these new forms of making music without problems. Maybe the younger fans have the capacity of accepting what is new and fresh, a thing that older Metalheads lose as time passed by. So the work of the quartet DEAD FRIENDS is addressed for the young, as the songs of the 5-track EP "High Wasted Genes" states.

Harsh and accessible melodies, a mix between some modern Metal genres, but keeping the technical level in a good way (sounding not as technical as a Prog Metal band, nor as simple as Hardcore bands from the past) and a very good dose of energy flowing from the speakers, their music is fresh and greasy, with very good choruses and all. Obviously, this formula was used many times in the latest years, but works finely on the quartet hands. The production catches all the singularities of the quartet's musical work, being aggressive and modern, as a young band must sound. But the greater difference is that it's not as greasy as many usually sound, so it's cleaner and defined than the greater part of their comrades of musical genre.

"Hyenas" bears an aggressive and modern outfit with many broken tempos and rhythmic changes (what shows the very good work from bass guitar and drums of the band). Into a more accessible tendency on modern Metal, "Knelt for Fear of Falling" is a track to be used to impulse their work in a more commercial way (including the use of the contrasts between harsh parts with melancholic moments). The mix of slow moments with Hardcore parts shown on "Cis White Whale" is very good, using charming guitar riffs. The broken tempos and modern ambiance come back on "Uncertain God", but into a more accessible approach. And "Branding Iron" is melancholic and somber, almost a ballad, maybe to reach a broader public.

Obviously that DEAD FRIENDS must mature a bit more to be in the right point to dispute a place among the greater names of modern tendencies, but "High Wasted Genes" shows that they're on the right path.
