Day of Doom - The Gates of Hell album cover

What some call Old School Death Metal really can bring us some good works, even now, more than 20 years after Death Metal explosion on the beginning of the 90's. Of course playing on the traditional way can give some very good results, and some excellent ones. But a band must fight to recreate some aspects of it. To play what others have played before can be a very hazardous and full of thorns way. And the North American trio DAY OF DOOM must deal with it, now on their third album, "The Gates of Hell".

On the same vein of bands like IMMOLATION and DEATH from "Leprosy" era, of course their work is not bad at all, due some different elements they use sometimes, but they still use an eroded formula used before, being sometimes fast and thundering, and sometimes slower and abrasive. Their mix of low grunts with some harsh screams, aggressive guitar riffs and strong rhythmic basis is nothing different than we heard before many times. Nothing new, but it's not a fully clone, and as well it's not smelling to mold.

Raw and brute is their sound quality, sounding explosive and heavy. But besides it cannot be ranked a high level quality, it's not bad as some can think. But it could be better in some aspects (especially if we talk about some ruthless guitar solos on low volume level).
Grasping and thundering, their best moments are when the band uses slower tempos than faster ones (in these, the band really seems like many others). So their highlights are "Father's Lie" (a sickening song, with some abrasive and slower tempos, where guitars show a very good work, as bass shows very good technique), the nightmare "Slaughter of the Lamb" (where some calm parts of guitars precedes and ends the massacre, with very good drumming), the more melodic and calm instrumental "Circle of an Eternal Aftermath" (perfect guitars, reminding us of some NWOBHM musical influences), and the violent "Reborn Through Oblivion Flames" (this one with very good vocals).

If these guys deal better with their music and try to bring out their more melodic influences, can become a great act.

They have potential!<
