Crowhurst - Crowhurst album cover

In United States Metal scene, we always see bands trying to create something new, something particular in musical terms to build a personal work, and their efforts are done fusing Metal styles. And no, "Big Daddy" here isn't saying that the same don't happen in other parts of the world, but it's a very common feature of North American Metal bands. And from time to time, on underground scene of that country, something astonishing comes in our way. And albums like "Crowhurst", from the Californian quartet CROWHURST is a good example of what I'm trying to say.

On the album, you'll find a Post Black Metal form of music fused with Stoner/Sludge Metal. It's like you hear a band in a style seeming a lot like bands as DOWN or CORROSION OF CONFORMITY (on their Sludge Metal times) with a whole musical atmosphere that took inspiration on bands like NECROMANTIA and BURZUM. Yes, the things are clearly like my words describe, so be prepared for harsh shrieked vocals (with some grunts here and there), very good guitar work, and a rhythmic kitchen that is extremely heavy and oiled, and all these elements together creates a darkened, experimental and bitter form of Metal.

When we have to deal with the quality of sound, it's a bitter and a bit raw one. But if you have in mind that Sludge Metal sound must have a little part of dirty on their music to become suitable to the label (as well as it happens to Black Metal too), of course you'll understand why things are nasty in this way here.

The band uses slow paced tempos in the greater part of time, what turns the music as a whole more abrasive and sinister. As the best ones, you can pick "A Precipice of Stone" (with very good vocals in a somber music), "Judgement" (somber, with very good work done on guitars. But some dark melodies arises on the song), and "Black Oceans" (very good drums and bass presence in the middle of such heavy tempos).

"Crowhurst" is a good work, and this band has a lot of potential.<
