Cro-Mags
For many Metal fans, there are no differences between regional schools of music, and it's a gross mistake. A good example is the differences between the US Schools West Coast and East Coast: in the first, Metal bands had to live with the uprising of Glam Metal after 1983, and in the second, Metal grew side by side with the strong Hardcore scene from New York. And the East Coast Hardcore influenced a lot Thrash Metal acts as ANTHRAX, NUCLEAR ASSAULT and OVERKILL, but Thrash Metal influenced a lot NYHC (for those that still remember those days, these initials means a lot). And on the veterans of CRO-MAGS this can be felt clearly, as this new EP, "2020" shows.
They were born as a NYHC band in the year of 1980, but their music evolved a lot for a blend between Thrash Metal and New York Hardcore. And on days when the fans struggled for the genres, they were one of the pioneers of gathering tribes. This can be felt as the songs of this EP are heard, but it sounds new, fresh and outstandingly aggressive, nasty and full of energy. It seems that the years sharpened even more their natural outfit, and the songs are the purest form of anarchist chaos made music, in the same vein of what they do since the days of "The Age of Quarrel" (1985). The production worked on a way that their songs could have the dirty and straight fold Hardcore nasty approach of the past (remembering: the quartet is a veteran on their musical genre), but with a defined outfit that allows the listeners to understand what is being played and expressed by them in their songs.
The experienced hands of them created a form of music that is honest and shows loyalty for their musical essence, and this can be felt on songs as "Age of Quarantine" (that shows many tempo changes in a Crossover way, enriched by excellent guitars), "2020" (this song is filled with fine melodies on the guitars, but with a strong rhythmic approach on bass guitar and drums as well), "Life on Earth" (a short and nasty song that praises their NYHC roots, but with clear Crossover touches), and "Chaos in the Streets" (this one is clearly a Hardcore song with its natural aggressive energy, very good vocals, and catchy to the bones). But they show that the quartet learned some lessons throughout all these years.
Praise the NYHC bonecrushers, listen to "2020" at the loudest, and see what CRO-MAGS is all about.
