Cathartes Aura
Cathartes Aura
As time passed by, evolution took its toll and Metal came to be more and more experimental. Even in extreme Metal genres, sometimes the fans must deal with unexpected works that can sound pretty weird at the first hearing, but with a better hearing, things can improve (or not). And for the beginner CATHARTES AURA, from the USA, things must improve a bit more, for "Cathartes Aura" (their first album) isn't an album easy to be understood.
Their musical work could be defined as Melodic Doom/Death Metal, or in other worlds, could be faced as a mix between Doom Death Metal bands as old PARADISE LOST or ANATHEMA with Progressive Rock lysergic voyages from PINK FLOID. But such experimental approach creates a set of boring moments, because the songs took so long time spams to be expressed, and the fans can become bored. In the way they do things, shorter songs would be a better choice. The sound production works finely for the listeners can take the best of "Cathartes Aura" on the clean parts, because everything can be heard and understood, but during the aggressive moments, it shows a crude insight that isn't the right one for the band's music.
The more than 20 minutes of travels and lysergic experimentalisms of "Movement I. Origins", the long (and non-sense) instrumental "Movement II. Contemplation", the aggressive parts of "Movement III. Sacrament" (after so long Progressive parts, some aggressiveness is welcome), and the oppressive "Movement IV. Death" are songs with some good ideas in some parts, but they seem to lack the right link between them. It's not a loss, but such form of music will satisfy just a small set of fans.
Maybe next time, CATHARTES AURA can bring something that is really worthy of the efforts of the listeners. For now, "Cathartes Aura" is just a vain try to force the patience of the listeners to extreme.
