Discipline
Calcined
Inside the worldwide Metal scene, a lot of sets of genres can be heard. Everyone can find something soft and with a Pop and melodic approach, or something brutal and oppressive. This wide range of musical possibilities is a feature that Metal has since a long time, and it seems to never stop. And CALCINED is a good band, as we can hear on "Discipline", their latest album.
Their musical work is based on a technical and brutal blend of old school Death Metal with the fast tempos of Grindcore. The core of their technical insight comes from the excellent work from bass guitar and drums (using broken tempos and rhythmic shifts), but the use of fast and noising guitars and contrasts between grunts with harsh screams is good as well. Of course, everyone heard something in this way before, but they have talent and show it without worrying with others opinions. The sound quality of "Discipline" is what we could expect from a Death Metal band: crude and extreme, trying to be near from the earlier albums recorded at Morrisound Studios in the 90's. Of course the tunes are brutal and nasty, but they fit on the way that this album was conceived to be. It's not perfect, but it is very good.
"Sit on the Mount of Fire" is extremely bitter due the contrasts of fast and slow tempos used, with a great work from bass guitar and drums; "McBeth (Act.V SC.1)" is a good match between brutality and technique, using of very good guitar riffs; the good and fast approach used on "The Long Horn" (some of Thrash Metal technique can be heard on the guitars); the oppressive atmosphere created by the guitars and vocals on "Morbid Pulse"; and the sharp aggressiveness of "Tormenting Attractions" can be named as the album's best songs, but all of them are good pieces of Death Metal.
"Discipline" is a good album, but the clear idea left after hearing it carefully is that the band can do a better work. So let's hear it and hope they'll be perfect next time.
