Boom Dox - Dead Nation album cover

In the early years of the 90's, a new Metal/Rock genre appeared: the mix between Metal with Hip Hop and Rap. Of course, the version for "Walk This Way" (from AEROSMITH) done by RUN D.M.C. and the early works from LIVING COLOUR, RED HOT CHILLY PEPPERS, URBAN DANCE SQUAD, MORDRED and FAITH NO MORE served to catalyze things, but with the coming of names as BODY COUNT took things to other level. And even after many years, the genre still reveals good names, as BOOM DOX. And the quartet brings the feeling of the ghettos on "Dead Nation".

The music is aggressive and full of Heavy Metal and Thrash Metal influences, some groove parts and with that Rap/Hip Hop way of singing on the vocals and backing vocals. This formula makes their work really near of what can be heard on Ice T's Metal gang, but it's really good, with a massive and nasty energy flowing from each song. So be prepared for being dragged with slums and alleys, because the quartet aims for that. Nickal (the band's guitarist) is the one who produced "Dead Nation", and he created something that assemble the heavy weight of Metal with the clean and defined sound that is usual for Hip Hop and Rap. And things work in a way that everyone can understand. And as guests, the band brought Vincent Price (BODY COUNT's bass player) to make some vocals on "Guns Blazing" and "Leave No Man Behind", George Nikolaou and Nick V on the guest vocals on "Dead Nation".

Be prepared, because these guys are serious with their music, and besides all the songs are really very good, "Zombie" (what amazing guitar riffs and solo), "Hit n' Run" (a bone crusher song, with a heavy weight coming from the melodies, and what great work on the vocals), "Death from Above" (an amazing energy flows from this one, and it shows a very good work on bass guitar and drums as well), "Leave no Man Behind" (the guitars are great once more on the riffs, along with very good vocals), and "Dead Nation" (a great and strong groove, but this is the most accessible song of the album due its charming chorus) are the right ones for an introduction to their work.

BOOM DOX is in the house, and we all hope that the quartet will bring us more great music in the future. For now, "Dead Nation" is really an excellent experience to the ears.
