Black Heiron - Kicking & Screaming album cover

Once more (and this idea will be written always when the need appears): no one needs to live in the past, but if you want to play a musical genre based on the past, be friendly with everyone and bring it to the present, and don't try to sound as if you were in the past. It's truly annoying to see bands trying to be like BLACK SABBATH, IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, METALLICA and others in their early days, because it's a waste of efforts (and money). And the North American quartet BLACK HEIRON commits such sin on the first full length, "Kicking & Screaming".

The band's musical work is an annoying and boring way to bring back the 80's, especially NWOBHM and the early of US Metal scene. They have a strong influence from UK Metal School, form those days when DIAMOND HEAD, ANGEL WITCH and other English titans walked the Earth, but with some aesthetic moments that can bring to the listeners' minds the elements from US Metal bands from the beginning of the USA Metal scene. But their musical work is totally cliché, without anything that can be said as their own, and the vocals are a problem. Some lessons and rehearsals can fix this, but the entire band must leave the shadow of their musical influences.

And what the Hell was John Boyak thinking when he produced and engineered the album? The sound quality is truly moldy and the worst thing that could be done. The band and the producer really seems to not understand that recording as many did in the 80's (like the band was recording a rehearsal) is something that doesn't make sense today? And such set of instrumental tunes is another term of the problematic equation the band created. A powerful and modern sonority could have saved the album in many points, but recording an album like a Demo Tape is the way to disaster! Once more: better call Joel Grind next time, because he knows what to do in these cases.

9 songs with some good ideas here and there, but the clichés, this terrible voice and the sound quality put everything to waste! "Outlaws of the Street", "Judgement Day", "Crimson Slaughter" (good guitars, but with such weak and noisy tunes stepped on the song's intention), "Kicking and Screaming" and "Panic Attack" has seconds that show talent, but the rest is unbearable! Really: was this recording meant to be an album?

No one can go back to the past, Einstein's Theory of Relativity forbids such thing, so it's better for BLACK HEIRON to come to the present, be themselves, ask their vocalist to learn how to sing (or kick him out of the band) and forget that they released "Kicking and Screaming". It's a shame for them (and a true martyrdom for the listeners)!
