Cosmocrator

KHNVN

And using influences from the past, this act created a great Death Metal release.
September 4, 2025
There's a tendency today of bands taking the old models of Death Metal to create something for their own. Again: it's not a sin to do it, and such thing keeps old ways alive; but it takes a serious look from the musicians to not be relying on what was already done, but take it to the next level, to create something personal. But on "Cosmocrator", KHNVM shows such level of personality. Speaking about the sonority, the band chose something between what was conceived on the early days of the Second Wave of Death Metal at Sunlight Studios, but with modern improvements. It's aggressive and distorted, but allowing the songs to flow in an understandable way and with good instrumental tunes. The band uses a form of traditional/classical Death Metal from the 90s, resembling some elements of the Swedish School of the genre in some points, but with clear traces of the North American School as well. A good technical work can be heard, but the most important feature of all is clear: inspiration. And it allows them to have a personal sound 'look' after all. And the energy unleashed here is enough to fracture the tectonic plates! By the way, the band uses points of psychology, philosophy and spirituality, with influences of "God is Not Great" (of Christopher Hitchens) and "Mysterium Coniunctionis" (of Carl Jung) on its lyrics, to express the conflicts between rationality and mysticism, the offering their fans something more than just 'demons' and 'gore' themes. "Purgatorial Pyre", "Fetid Eden", "Mercurial Remnants", "Fathomless Enigma" (a short and introspective instrumental song), "Cosmocrator", "Venom Spawn" and "Haunting Blight" are truly great songs that shows how they can work with old clichés to create something personal and very good. Good death growls entangled with massive riffs and solid bass guitar and drums rhythms is the mix offered here with a good technical appeal. It's a very good experience to deal with the songs in the end of all. "Cosmocrator" can't be said as an instantaneous classic (only time can tell such thing) of the genre, but it states clearly that KHNVM is a name that Death Metal fans (and extreme Metal fans in general) must take seriously. And must hear as well!
