Temple Balls - Avalanche
February 19, 2024
Yes, I know, the band’s name sounds like a sex toy, or maybe a male sexual disease….sorry I’ll get my mind out of the gutter and get back to the business at hand and delve into this hard rock album that promises to “set your friggin’ pants on fire.”

Apogean – Cyberstrictive
February 13, 2024
Wind up the rope as tightly as possible, and then step back and let it go…that is the sound that comes through strongest on the album. Yet, within the confines of their impossibly tight structures, melodies escape somehow. The music isn’t as cold and sterile as one might expect…it breathes. This is a very talented band with an expansive take the genre.

Blacklist Union – Letters From The Psych Ward
February 12, 2024
From the outside, “Letters from the Psych Ward” looks very plain, very middle of the road. Happy to admit that I was wrong.
review
Paralandra – Street Magic
February 12, 2024
Spoiler alert: This is a review I wanted to…no needed to write to get the word out about an amazing band that I saw “live” last year and instantly became a fan. They blew me away with their explosive musical performance and energized and animated stage presence.

Hatred Reigns-Awaken the Ancients
February 11, 2024
Canadian deathcore band HATRED REIGNS puts the pedal to the heaviest of metals in a quest to leave the rest of the bands in the dust.

Notörious – Marching On
February 5, 2024
“True Norwegian Glam Metal” is how NOTÖRIOUS self describes their musical style. Truth be told, Norway is known more for Death metal than Glam Metal, and more for Soaring White Mountains than Glam Metal, and more for hosting the Nobel Peace Price than Glam Metal, so forgive me if I’m a little skeptical, but I will give them every chance to make me a believer.

Sortilège - Larmes de héros (Reissue)
January 15, 2024
Borrowing the line from the sci-fi movie Poltergeist II “They’re back”, and that’s exactly what is happening here as I review the third reissue “Larmes de heros” from the French heavy metal Sortilege that was originally released in 1986. I haven’t had too much positive to say on the first two reissue reviews, so hopefully the third time is the charm, otherwise, borrowing the line from Terminator II, it’s “Hasta la vista baby”.

Ihsahn – Ihsahn
January 13, 2024
For me, the album was like a project in extremes, contrast, and the uncommon chord progressions that define his career. The music touches each extreme, from tender, sweet passages to ones that bite with the fangs of a viper, and you never know what is coming next. His compositions are masterful, as always, and this far into his career he shouldn’t have a bag so deep and vast, yet he does.

Svartanatt - Last Days On Earth
January 11, 2024
A good blend between Hard Rock, Psychedelic Rock and Progressive Rock with a gloomy touch.

Degrave-Volume
January 5, 2024
Missouri band Degrave wrap their Southern hooks around an angry slab of good ol' fashioned thrash metal.

Sortilège – Sortilège (reissue)
January 2, 2024
The French are known for many things, champagne, croissants, beautiful cities and being great lovers, but they are not exactly a heavy metal haven, so we’ll see if SORTILÈGE can dispel that

Immortal Guardian – Unite and Conquer
December 29, 2023
The best part of the album for me was the band’s strong musicianship. They are adept at every instrument and the vocalist has some set of pipes. At times however, the songs can border on the cheesy side of music, but what Power Metal band doesn’t straddle that line every now and again.

Hammock – Love in the Void
December 16, 2023
This album is all about texture, and substance, and the fact that they say so much with so little sonority. The atmosphere shifts from warm colors of yellow and orange to colder ones of blue and purple. Perhaps the best thing that I can say about their work is that no singular feeling can come from the album, meaning that to each listener, the album will mean something personal. For me, it’s about that gratifying and rewarding experience of finding love or being in love. But anyone who is knows that it comes with its share of work…that is the burden of love. It’s a beautiful and heartbreaking thing at the same time, and no one works better with these life paradoxes than HAMMOCK.
review
Lynch Mob – Babylon
December 14, 2023
This was a tired and uninspired effort to me sounds like a release for the sake of a release, meaning that none of those trademark Lynch riffs or solos was anywhere to be found. Understand this: it is very hard for bands that have been around this long to continue to make good and original material, but this doesn’t even come close.

Dictator Ship - Electric Jihad

Blackbird Angels – Solsorte

Bjørkø – Heartrot
December 8, 2023
Solo albums from musicians from well-known bands can be hit or miss…but this one’s a hit. Tomi reaches deep into his pockets and produced an album rich in diversity and several different styles. Critics could argue that it lacks an overall sense of identity, but I believe that is where the magic lies.

72 Legions - What a God Could Be
December 6, 2023
A fine combonation between melodic Death Metal and modern Metal elements can be found here.
review
Miara – Hungering Inside
December 6, 2023
Let’s start with the positives. Many band in this style stumble early on trying to push the Death side of the genre over the Melodic side, but MIARA is equally adept at both. If it wasn’t for the founding fathers of the genre existing, I would love this sound. As it is however, it is just too much of a copy of these bands without anything original to offer fans.

Impalement – The Dawn of Blackened Death

Overall, this was a very strong album steeped in the traditions of both genres, but with a modern sound as well. The band plays very confidently, and shoves their sound down your throat with a deep smile.
