Heart of Darkness
Zombeast
People have the idea that Punk Rock was important to the consolidation of Metal in the 80s, but to be honest, such words aren’t enough to express everything that happened. And it’s usual to think of RAMONES and THE SEX PISTOLS as the sole influences, but a mighty name is forgotten: THE MISFITS. Not only a Punk Rock act, but the one of the pioneers of Horror Punk (a subgenre of Punk Rock where is used imagery and lyrics influenced by horror films and science fiction B-movies). And the source is still fertile, as depicted on “Heart of Darkness”, the new full-length of the North American quintet ZOMBEAST.
Using the old melodic approach of Punk Rock on their music (in a similar way to THE MISFITS sounded on the past), but with the lyrics depicting horror themes, they really sound catching and great, full of excellent melodic hooks, and with those old and good elements, with some shady moments (as heard on “Torso”). Their music can be said accessible to a broader public, and can get Punks, Metalheads, Gothic Rock addicted and many more. And again: this album is truly addictive! “Heart of Darkness” was produced by the quintet, and was mixed and mastered by Larry Elyea, and the result is a fine sonority that evades to be filled with endless digital editions, with a clear ‘hard-and-straight’ appeal. But this is the ideal way for their music. And what excellent cover (some could think they’re a Death Metal act).
All their 10 songs are amazing, and can really hook new fans. But “Devil’s Whore” (such somber appeal mixed with melodic hooks and excellent guitars is always great to be heard on such Punk Rock outfit), “Red Ripper” (some elements from Heavy Metal can be heard on this one, especially on bass guitar and drums weighty playing), “Call of the Wild” (the sensation of hearing influences of MOTÖRHEAD are just because of Punk Rock essence of this one, and what very good vocals and backing vocals), “Torso” (again great guitars can be heard, including melodic solos, but the somber ambiences are really excellent), “The Cycle” (this is a massive blow of energy, again with some nasty elements of Hard Rock clearly heard, and it’s impossible to resist this one), “Heart of Darkness” (another somber Punk Rock moment, but what great melodies), and… Hey, if you know what Punk Rock means, you must listen to “Cold Embrace”, “The Witching Bell”, “Night Demon” and “Dark Path” as well, because the albums is truly delicious to be heard, and easy to like.
“Heart of Darkness” is that kind of surprise that everyone love to have, so listen to and surrender to ZOMBEAST cult!
