Zafakon
ZAFAKON is a Thrash/Death Metal band based out of Puerto Rico. Formed in 2010, this is the band's second full-length album, and contains ten tracks. "Conveyor of Shame" is the opening track. Vocally is sounds like traditional Death Metal to me. Instrumentally however I hear a mixture of Death and Thrash, though closer to Death for me. It's a mid-tempo piece that features some running guitar lines throughout, and does have some swing that you would hear in the Thrash genre as well. "Twisted Brains" is more of a Thrash song, with a more traditional riff structure and speed. There is a discernable chorus, though not overall long, an extended guitar solo, and a breakdown of sorts to round out the end of the song.
"Ecosfear" is a bit more rowdy and with more overall presence. The chords used run in the minor key for the most part, but when they hit the major key it creates a noticeable dissonance and ultimately, some unintended melody. The interlude was unexpected, though it definitely adds some texture. "Prevaricator" continues in this vein with a heavy, intense sound and chords that contrast with one another, like two speeding trains heading to a collision. The near lack of harmony in this song is the main statement. "Sirens," on the other hand, seems to follow a more easy to hear melody line, though the music is still very dark and strong. "Valor y sacrificio" has a slow, building start and in many ways is a very different track than the others on the album. Besides being an instrumental, the riff is almost bright and the low end has nearly dropped off.
"Arbeit macht frei" has an official lyric video, where the message deals with the mundane labors of work, and being "slave to the machine" as opposed to using your own thoughts and questions. The song has an anthem feeling to it really. "Phantom Scream" features a riff and sound that are akin to relentless punching or striking and really juices up your sense of energy and drive. The title track, "Release," closes the album in an epic, nine minute composition. It's a slow, laborious affair, with several different passages, that allows plenty of time for lamentation. Overall I thought the album had potential, but never quite got off the ground fully. The heaviness is there, but memorability fell short.
