Y&T - Yesterday and Today Live album cover

How do you review an all time classic by one of the most influential bands that has ever walked this earth? And before you start saying that they weren't that at all, you might want to listen to a lot of the massive Hair Metal bands we have had over the years. Especially the ones that hail from the Los Angeles area. They all recognise Y&T as the one band that put them towards the course they travelled. I myself encountered the band first personally in 1982, when I met them at the Pinkpop festival in the Netherlands and at Reading festival in the UK. I spoke with them for some time, and they were very nice men.

But that doesn't make them good musicians, does it? No, it's not a guarantee, but the guys of Y&T have always been masters of their trade. Unfortunately these recordings don't include the original members Joey Alves (guitar) and Leonard Haze (drums), but their replacements did almost just as good a job. I can assure you that when you were part of the audience, you would be enchanted and mesmerized by the sheer pleasure of the players, the pure quality of the songs and the outstanding renditions that was thrown in your face. Not enjoying a Y&T simply wasn't an option.

"Yesterday and Today Live" was originally released by Metal Blade Records in 1991 as a thirteen track album, and it really rocked my world. Somehow the producer Scott Boorey was able to capture all those elements I mentioned in the last paragraph. Unfortunately the album somehow didn't enter the realm of the all-time live classics, which it should have. Now the record company must have thought the time was right to rerelease it, due to the lessening of the health of band leader Dave Meniketti, the only original member of the band nowadays. He has overwon the big C, and still plays some shows, but doesn't tour at the moment.

Who knows what the future will bring for Y&T, but in the meantime you are duly invited to enjoy the immense pleasant spoils of "Yesterday and Today Live". The big difference with the first release being that it will be on tow cd's rather than one, plus it has the addition of two extra songs, and they are massive ones as well. They are both from their breakthrough album "Earthshaker", and like the rest of the songs, have easily stood the test of time.
