Yggdrasil is the World Tree, a great ash tree located at the center of the universe, which joins the nine worlds of Norse cosmology. A name full of meaning for the band, YGGDRASIL, the Swedish trio (not to be confused with the other YGGDRASIL Folk band from Feroe Islands) that combines Northen Folk music with the Heavy Metal sound.

The songs for YGGDRASIL's first full album Kvallningsvindar Over Nordront Land (Evening Winds Over Northern Land) were written during the 2000 - 2001 era  and YGGDRASIL recorded these songs for the first album in 2005 (after releasing 3 demos under their name); until now they were looking for a record company to release their work. Magnus Wohlfart is the main composer of this trio with the available help of Gustaf Hagel who wrote the lyrics. The band prefers the Swedish language to describe their Northern mystic world. I only imagine that they talk about Pagan myths and legends of the Norse mythology.

Kvallningsvindar Over Nordront Land has the basic Folk melodies and feeling that Kristofer Janeic delivers with his violin. If you add the Heavy sound of drums, bass and Metal guitar and the atmospheric raw vocals, you get the sound of MY DYING BRIDE in The  Angel And The Dark River album.  The excellent vocal work that has been done by YGGDRASIL is making the final result even more mystic. The addition of female vocals from Michelle Maass and the necessary classical/acoustic guitar passages make the Folk element clearer.

If you are a Pagan myth admirer and a MY DYING BRIDE fan, I think YGGDRASIL will be your personal favourite, nevertheless the Swedish language sounds like elves from a magic land, talking to each other. The Folk/Metal trio from Sweden delivers a fantastic atmosphere that can touch these certain musical tastes. If you want to take the trip to the Northern Lands join YGGDRASIL, it's your call.
