Drawing from the vast variety of techniques, styles and sounds within the world of metal, YAUTJA generates a relentless powerhouse of exasperated noise with their latest full length album "The Lurch". The deep heavy guitar tone combined with the almost harsh cracking drums, and those powerful gutturals, mash together Sludge and Grindcore to create an ordered chaos of grand proportions. Politically charged anger that doesn't let up, this album is a war cry against the rampant Right Wing in America. The amazing album cover, by artist Brandon Geurts, doesn't pertain to the sound of the album, which only makes me love the aesthetic of it more.

The first track, "A Killing Joke," is, ironically, full of life. Bursting through the speakers, the Tom heavy beat crashing over the raw and relentless guitars. Keeping their pedal to the metal with the next track, Tyler Coburn's ability to manipulate the feel and pace of the music with his modulation on the Ride bell is a huge highlight of the album.

The brutally slow angry anthem "Undesirables" brings a new level of emotion to the album, the instruments have a chance to stretch out and this song feels very calm and steady in comparison to the previous tracks.

The implausibly fast blasting, with accents on the ride bell to give it an amazing feel compared to a straight blast, is just a taste of Tyler Coburn's amazing percussive talent. Seamlessly moving through time signatures and playing styles, he always knows when to slow it down and really speed it up, I'm a big fan of any section where the guitar riff runs and the drums dance over it, without being tethered to it. Reminds me of early MESHUGGAH.

"The Lurch" is a chaotic, experimental explosion of maximalist Metal. The power of YAUTJA doesn't let up for a second, hunting down ferocious sounds with the same efficiency as the Predator they are named after. The production is fantastic and songwriting has you constantly on your toes. If you are a fan of the organized chaos of bands like DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and MESHUGGAH, The Lurch will not disappoint.
