XYZ is one of those bands that emerged in the late 80s (the second wave?) playing American 'hair' Metal music. Like so many other bands, two albums were released prior to the Grunge/Alternative Rock uprising and a good amount of success (aka recognition & sales) surfaced. A change of seasons afterwards and what XYZ offered after that was live/outtakes/demo CDs (plus the 'mature' Letters To God comeback album in 2003) in order to have the name signing on as bright as possible.
The Best Of CD acts like a retrospective of the Los Angeles-based quartet, formed by Terry Ilous in the mid-80s. The Don Dokken-produced debut LP (1989) was a great piece of hardrockin' songs; the Inside Out single scored some success but the essence of Maggie, the mild attraction of What Keeps Me Loving You and the powerful groove of Take What You Can up-raised the album to a higher level. The follow-up, Hungry was more or less in the same vein (with a more Rock 'n' Roll vibe at times) but did not even make it the same. Still, shakers like Don't Say No and Face Down In The Gutter can rock the house easily and When I Find Love is a corny ballad-type shelter nonetheless.
And that's all. No track off the Letter To God album, no 'elusive' tune from the rest of the band's compilation releases, so that the Press Release can be judged as - at least - 'funny'. The last song, Falling In You, is a new composition and its lack of 'nerve' should not mean something to you if an old-school melodic Hard Rock fan.
I'd bet on buying all three 'normal' XYZ albums in separate. If this proves to be an expensive activity (many CD copies turn up for a good amount of money on e.g. Ebay), OK, then choose The Best Of. The rating goes for the music and only.
