Bands with little to no information on the Internet gives the listener the rare chance to take the plunge and listen to their records or watch them live without really knowing anything about them. Sometimes it can be worth it, sometimes not; in the case of German Death Metal band WOUND it was an interesting experience that left you engrossed. Their latest weapon of destruction is their record 'Engrained', this is a more than appropriate title for those who live for Death Metal.
They formed in the year 2011 and over the past six years they have released an array of records including a compilation, a demo, a split and two full length albums. They appear to have a growing group of cult followers.
With their latest release 'Engrained' they appear to have fused together Black and Death Metal; sometimes when merging sub-genres of metal together it can either work magnificently or backfire dreadfully. In this case, they got the mix just right when they created these deadly tunes. The first two tracks give off a Sludge, Doom vibe that with the low tones of the guitars and the blunt, aggressive vocals.
In the case of the tracks 'The Wrath Of Fire' and 'Morbid Paradigm' there may even be the tint of Melodic Death.
The brutal vocals and the melodic guitars in 'The Wrath Of Fire' harmonise extremely well together. One can imagine that this particular tune would be great played live to a crowd of equally ruthlessly enthusiastic fans.
'Morbid Paradigm' reminds one of if Swedish legends AMON AMARTH were to convert to Black Metal and their content being less Viking like. In terms of the sweeping melody on the guitars, AMON AMARTH came to mind.
The brutal savagery only continues across the record and with the complex yet intriguing structures within each track it is more than enough to keep the listener engaged and wanting more. It's becomes 'engrained' into the mind, which is the reason why that the title of this album is more than appropriate.
Closing track which contains the same title as the album does an excellent job of ensuring this album stays on the mind and not think about anything else. For a track lasting more than five minutes, it is extremely important to keep the track interesting. The song 'Engrained' most certainly does that, and a bit more; within the first two minutes you are already sucked in. It's a mixture of all their best elements of the album rolled into one track; the sweeping guitar melodies, the rapid drums, the mixture of Black Metal screams and Death Growls. Not only does it stay on the mind, it can leave the listener hankering for more.
Recommended for those who love Death and Black Metal or just those Metal heads wanting to try something different.
