WORTH hailing from Barcelona, Spain were formed in 2014. The melodic Death Metal outfit release their sophomore album with a length of about 70 minutes. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Ricky Daga at TitansLab Recording Studio in Italy. The self-titled album was released via Italian Death, Thrash, and Gothic Metal specialists WormHoleDeath. The album has a powerful start with "Time Won't Heal": thunderous guitar riffing, crunching basslines, dark melodies, and the female growling vocals at the lower end of the guttural range. The song is a mid-tempo track at a head-banging rhythm and although the melodies have a slight melancholic touch. It is a track full of aggression and anger. "In Compulsion" follows up on the strong opening of the album. The track is slower at a measured tempo and the melodies are grim and doomy. The chorus melodies have a certain catchiness. The song includes a mid-tempo break, which contributes very well to the track even though a lead guitar solo might have been worth adding.
"Entwined" has a slow and doom-laden start with the guitars. It transitions into a mid-tempo track, but retains the doomy melodic framework. The beginning of the track even reminded me on the early 90s period of PARADISE LOST, however, there is a switch towards crazy speed several times during the track, which changes the character of the track completely. "Entwined" is an interesting mixture between melodic Death and Doom Metal. "Cravings" starts with a short orchestral pre-lude, before powerful riffing supported by a lot of double-bass drumming drives the track forward. Although the main part of the track is played at a measured mid-tempo, there are several twists in rhythm throughout. The melodies are epic, especially during the chorus parts. "Chased" has a dynamic fast start driven by the guitars. It is one of the faster and more aggressive songs on the album and it has many oriental vibes in the melodies. Highlights are the growling vocals that give "Chased" an extra layer, the lead guitars, and the comprehensive drumming. In my view, "Chase" is one of the album highlights.
"Unbound" is again a doomier track with epic and slightly melancholic melodies. The song is a Doom Metal inspired track in terms of the melodic framework, however, the growling vocals give the track an extra dimension. Highlights, besides the vocals, are the lead guitar contributions. "Emptiness" is a mid-tempo track with direct riffing leading the track through the verse parts, while more complexity to the guitars is added for the chorus parts. It is one of the tracks with a very simple verse/chorus structure without any changes within the verse parts, and a bit more variation in the chorus parts. "Morning Blaze" has a quiet start with the guitars, but quickly changes into another powerful doom-laden track. It is a mixture of a track with ballad-esque features and faster melodeath parts with melancholy in the melodies. It is perhaps the track with the most abrupt changes and highlight is the lead guitar solo. "Morning Blaze" is another album highlight. "Vanished" begins with an instrumental guitar part and then transitions into an epic mid-tempo track with cool riffing and a lot of double-bass drumming. The track is driven by the dark guitar melodies, while the vocals follow the melodies. There are a few twists in rhythm while the melodies are maintained, making the track more complete. The lead guitar parts fit perfectly into the melodic framework of the song. "Vanished" is the official lyric video release and the YouTube link is provided below.
"Nu Uita" is a mid-tempo track with heavy and direct guitar riffing. It is one of the more aggressive tracks on the album with grim melodies, but with less Doom Metal parts added to it at least for the majority of the track. "Nu Uita" is Romanian and means "Do Not Forget". "Frozen Echelon" starts as a real head-banger for the verse parts and bridges over into doomier chorus parts at a slightly slower pace. The chorus melodies including the vocal lines are melancholic. "Frozen Echelon" is one of the tracks without complexity and the simple verse/chorus structure. "Nova" starts with thunderous, but catchy riffing at mid-tempo. The guitar riffing and the added lead guitars drive the track forward, while the vocals follow the melodies. It is a mid-tempo song without twists and turns in rhythm and it is one of the shortest album tracks. "One Named Nightmare" continues with the mid-tempo rhythm, while the guitars are more lead driven. There are a few changes in rhythm as some parts of the track are slow with gloomy melodies. Highlight is the break during the middle part with the powerful and epic guitars and vocals. The album finishes with "To Light One's Fire", and it starts with a guitar solo part transitioning into a slow track at a measured tempo during the verse part. While the verse parts are Doom Metal inspired, the chorus parts are frantic at crazy speed. It is a back and forth between the verse/chorus parts until the mid-tempo break which includes a very contributing lead guitar solo. "To Light One's Fire" is another album highlight and a very good way to end the album.
WORTH deliver an excellent melodic Death/Doom Metal album. "Worth" is an album with a dark and doom-laden melodic framework, driven by the guitars and an excellent vocalist. The vocals are key to the darkness of the album as Cri Jill keeps the songs excellently together. WORTH have developed their very own and unique sound on the album. If there are any flaws at all, then that the album might be a bit lengthy. The album is very well produced. WORTH release a top quality album and set the bar very high with their mixture of melodic Death Metal and Doom Metal. Fans of both genres will love the album and look forward to see WORTH live on stage presenting the new material.
