Almost Human
Wormhole
WORMHOLE “erupt from the underground with “Almost Human,” their third album and first for Season of Mist. The Baltimore band have punched a hole through the death metal continuum with their outrageous onslaught of tech slam. “Almost Human” shows WORMHOLE’s rapid, writhing ascent. There’s no ceiling they can’t slam through.” The album has eight songs, and “System Erase” is first. The first thing that you notice is the command that the band has over the instruments…well, that, and the deep guttural vocals that are completely indiscernible. The music is deeply dissonant and almost devoid of any melody.
“Elysiism” has more melody in the opening sequence, but it quickly decomposes to more aggressive and dissonant tones. The heavily structured song does loosen a bit along the way, and you get the sense of the band’s impeccable timing. “Spine Shatter High-Velocity Impact” is very much that…a smattering of impossibly fast elements mixed in with a grinding riff and more gutturals. “Deep Fortress Orbital Stationary” sounds like a continuation of the previous song, picking up where it left off. The guitar solo section is a bit more linear but this sounds like organized chaos to me. “Delta Labs” is a downward spiral into the sadistic thoughts that you had buried in your mind.
The title track is another odd combination of almost jovial elements in the leads with structurally chaotic and devoid of melody element underneath. “Bleeding Teeth Fungus” is a very quick ride in a rocket powered vehicle with no doors or safety belts over and through a literal war zone. You are driving so fast, that your only hope is that you can dodge and outrun bullets. “The Grand Oscillation” closes the album, and it’s the first bit of breath that the listener can catch. Overall, the songs are very short, because they are jam packed with material so dense, they would seem unbreakable. The gutturals are deep, their Death Metal sound is rich, and they toy with meter changes like a genius assigned a menial task.
