I reviewed this Swedish Death Metal's juggernaut third full length album, "The Great Desolation," back in 2018 and found it to be an amazing modern Old School Death Metal album from one of the originals of the scene. As their benchmark album, at least in my opinion, I never expected their next album to be as good-I mean, every band has that "one" album that is just how things go.  With that being said, "Choirs of the Fallen," is pretty goddamn close to their pinnacle.  A band like this can only put out such an exceptional album if they just simply love what they do.  So, what do WOMBBATH do on "Choirs of The Fallen?"  They play Old School Swedish Death Metal with that classic HM-2 sound.

The first track, "Fallen," is proof the band is content on just ripping your face off.  Jonny's deep growl sets things off as those blood drench riffs cut deep into the ears just as the drums batter them into near oblivion.  The song's later moments reveal an atmosphere that slathers the song in a very horrific and harrowing vibe.  Hell, even the guitar solo is eerie and the whole set up works perfectly for the band's style."A Sweet Taste of Death," lures in the kill with some rotting melodies and drums that go from methodical to straight up bull dozer.  Hakan and Thomas pile on the riffs to the point of nearly hypnotizing me, so caught up was I in the dangerous but interesting song.  It is kind of like a car wreck-you know it will be brutal, but you just really want to look at it anyway.

The perfectly titled "Void," is definitely one of the more hair-raising tracks.  The way the guitars can just change the very feel of the song at such an unyielding pace is further proof that WOMBBATH command an intelligent hold on OSDM but can still push their sound into reaches some other bands of this heavy handed nature just can't obtain. "Wings of Horror," might be my favorite track on the album just because, well, it sounds horrifying.   I hope it never happens but if I had to fight an army of demons because reasons, I would want this song to play in the background.  The song is an anthem of evil and it just oozes with constant "oh shit" moments.  The ending is so...unnerving that I was glad I wrote this review with the lights on with my children running around screaming because it kept me understanding that I wasn't really being approach by some winged monstrosity.

The title track is exactly what I wanted to hear in an album of this caliber and mood: a culmination of the entire album's ideas, approach, and emotion.  They really go all out on this track, a beastly raging monster that is easily one of the best tracks they have ever written.  Despite its name, the Death Metal genre doesn't often scare or unnerve me but with "Choirs of the Fallen," WOMBBATH have crafted a horror drenched, serial killer soundtrack of nightmares.  And I couldn't enjoy it more.  This is the first perfect score I have given in a while and the boys have earned it with every bloody step.
