Elemental Reclamation

Travel to a time long past with WOLVENGUARD. The band was formed in Texas, USA, and has created a sound very different from their current environment and time. "Elemental Reclamation" offers a brief respite from everyday trials with tales of battles and adventures long past. While the band's sound consists of familiar elements, their music invokes the essence of metal in their own unique way. The guys themselves classify their music as "Archaic Blackened Metal", which makes sense in that there are references to the past and to the musical elements typical of black metal. The intro riffs to "Elemental Reclamation" build the anticipation of battle. I liked the "harmonized" harsh vocals. The guitar counter-melodies add interest, and the reiteration of the intro riffs later on keep the momentum going. The melancholy solo (with great harmonies) conjures an image of warriors weary from battle.
"Formless Aeons", with its slower tempo, gives the impression of long years of war. The vocal performance on this track was particularly powerful. The clean vocals were a pleasant surprise, and carried off well, and the harmonies with the clean and harsh vocals was a nice touch. This number also had some great drum work, with the drum rolls echoing the endless rolling on of years. This track was the highlight for me, with its memorable main riffs. Lastly, "Vangrimst" gives a feeling of longing for the past with its drifting intro riffs. The clean vocals are a rich baritone, and add to the feeling of nostalgia. This track also had some memorable drum fills, and the layered guitar riffs add interest. "Elemental Reclamation" shows that WOLVENGUARD is a promising band - they have some good things going for them. Those who enjoy IMMORTAL, EX DEO, BATHORY (especially the "Viking Metal" era), and AMON AMARTH will most likely enjoy this offering too.
