German Power/Thrash Metallers WOLFEN are releasing their third full length album "Evilution" on September 12, 2014 has given us at Metal Temple the opportunity to review it before its release. WOLFEB are the self-proclaimed "missing link between traditional old school and modern sounds" "Evilution" has ten tracks and comes in at about 56 minutes of listening time.
These guys truly are the link between traditional old school and modern metal. While there are elements of both Thrash and Power Metals, I feel like there is much more here than those two genres can't provide to give justice to the sound WOLFEN has created. It's the ultimate mix between OZZY, SEPULTURA and ICED EARTH along with their own sound that brings their sound over the top.
From the guitars to the drums to the bass to the vocals, these Germans know metal. I love that there is still amazing metal being made that doesn't involve any growled vocals. The drums are powerful and hard hitting and mesh perfectly with the guitars. The guitars are what balance the Thrash and Power Metal sounds with a Hard Metal sound.
There are many tracks on the album that are written with such skill that it is impossible to not feel something good within your musical soul. The album boasts tracks like "Sea of Sorrows", "Digital Messiah", "Pure Culture", and "The Irish Brigade"; all interesting lyrical content and all have a unique sound. I dig albums and writers that can put worldly issues and problems into music without making it sound chaotic, disembodied, or psychotic. "Evilution" does just that.
Bringing history back and foretelling the future is present among the lyrical content and the music takes me back to the days when metal was just becoming something with substance. "Evilution" is a travel back to the new. Check this album out and check WOLFEN out if you haven't done so already. Definitely an album for the lovers of old power metal meets a new era.
