Call Of The Black Winds

I admit it can be hard to get into music sung in other languages than English (or perhaps my native tongue Swedish), still I really want to give everything a chance. What I liked about WOLFCHANT is that they, on "Call Of The Black Winds" balances the raw and atmospheric Black Metal elements with more melodic Power Metal melodies. They also have a touch of Folk Metal in the mix. It should be interesting, right? And it is, take "Naturgewalt" for example, here that they really balance the mix between it all. There's a nice groove, the evil black and all up to fairly melodic. But what bothers me a lot and take down the whole impression of the album is the keyboards (or trumpets at occasion) which are so jolly cheerful it becomes cheesy at times.
A lot of the tracks on "Call Of The Black Winds" would easily fit as the soundtrack to some imperial fantasy movie (very much matching with the cover artwork, fantastic picture by the way). It has the drama and the triumphant melodies, sometimes so high-colored you can feel the horses run pass you. I'm not very fond of these happy light weight melodies in any kind of Metal really. So that is a matter of taste, I can not judge if they are creative, witty or (as I feel) just annoying.
A quite strange thing happened with WOLFCHANT after a while though, as I couldn't take it in at the first try I let it rest and after a while it actually sounded better. That absolutely has to do with "Call Of The Black Winds" being a really well played album, it also shows it has a lot more substance to it than I felt at the first few spins. Then this kind of Metal, the Black Metal with Power Metal melodies will never be my favorite type of Metal, but if you're into it, this is a great album.
"One Last Farewell"is perhaps the song that sticks out the most on the album with its more Heavy Metal oriented riff and mainly clean type of vocals. Of course, it is the song closest to my taste so it's no real surprise it became my favorite. There are a few more apart from the vocal arrangements that brings the mind to RUNNING WILD, at those times "Call Of The Black Winds" is really pleasant. It is a rather diverse album, quite split in style between the songs but that's absolutely not a disadvantage. Especially the title track shows that since it holds all style from the acoustic Folk Metal, to the Black and everything in between. The diversity makes it interesting even if all of it doesn't really appeal to me.
