The time is coming for all Metalheads, old and new ones, to make a simple and important choice: in which side of the line you'll be when you'll have to choose between Metal and political correctness? Yes, I must ask this question, because a little time ago, a professor from Leeds Beckett, Professor Karl Spracklen, heavily criticized Pagan Metal, calling the fans racists and sexists, speaking a lot of academic shit. By my side, I saw that Pagan Metal is a true manifestation of the essence of cultures of the past that are arising again in many countries of the world. If he doesn't like, it is his problem, but offend us all?
We are Metalheads, so we transgress and rebel again patterns. We must keep this flame alive, the same flame that burns inside WOLFCHANT's music. These Germans are connected with the Pagan Alma Mater from Europe, and "Bloodwinter" is a clear proof of my words. It's the purest and aggressive Pagan/Folk Metal, with some clean, melodic and tender moments. The formula was used before many times, but as these guys have a strong and bold personality, it works perfectly in a way that binds us all to their excellent form of music. The production is almost perfect. It really deals perfectly with all the aspects of their music, because the songs sound clear when it's needed, but with the Pagan atmosphere and aggressive weight on the times when energy comes to high peaks.
Lovely on all the tracks, I'd like to point to some songs merely for reference (and because Mr. Steinmetal would ask for my head if don't do so): the climatic and grandiose "Schicksalsmacht" (what great rhythmic changes and fine work from bass guitar and drums), the excellent midterm between extreme Metal and some elements from Power Metal shown on "Wolfchant (A Wolf to Man)" (the contrast between harsh vocals with clean ones under the very good keyboards orchestrations is amazing), the great melodic lines on guitars presented on "Das Bollwerk" and on "Bloodwinter", the thunderous march of tempos changing of "Heritage of Fire", the chaotic feeling created by the changes of vocal tunes used on "Anthems of Revenge", and the long and filled with Pagan elements "New Born Killer" (acoustic guitars on the beginning with lovely keyboards parts, the a marching tempo filled with melodic and aggressive energy).
If you're into political correctness discuss, you'll never be able to understand such lovely album, but if the soul of your forefathers and ancestors still lives within you, "Bloodwinter" is a perfect album.
