Wolf Counsel
This is the fifth album by Doom Metal band WOLF COUNSEL and the first album that features new singer Con Doyle. The drums recorded at Iguana Studio, Freiburg, Germany, bass and vocals recorded at Deshure Studio, Cork, Ireland, guitars recorded at Miracle Studio, Zurich, Switzerland, it was mixed and mastered by Shauny Cads at Last Light Recordings, Dublin, Ireland, February 2022, and the artwork and layout by Roberto Toderico. The album contains nine songs.
"Healer" is the first. The riff is slow and simple, as are the vocals. But the pitch of the vocals is off the main melody line, and the production could be better. The lead and bass work is pretty decent. "Torchbearer" opens with some decent lead work, but falls back into a slow groove of simple, but powerful riffs. The main problem is that you have heard all of these riffs before, and so far, the album brings nothing new to the table. "Ruins" is another slow grind with pitchy vocals. It is actually a bit painful to listen to them if you have a trained musical ear like I do. The audible bass notes almost make up for the off key vocals...almost.
"The Old Ways" begins with a faster pace and sonically, some more doomy elements. However, the riffs are starting to go from bad to worse, and the song are starting to blend together. The title track isn't much better. The divide between the key of the vocals and the key of the music is widening. "On Stranger Shores" begins with an odd sounding riff and some lead notes. From there, it settles back into a heavy groove with about as much excitement as watching paint dry. "Farewell" closes the album. It's another slow, dragging song with some lead harmonies from the guitars. From there, it settles back into another repetitive groove.
Overall, this was a painful listening experience. The disconnect from the vocals to the music was one of the worst that I have heard this year, and the riffs were all just re-hashed and you have heard them thousands of times before. There is nothing original, and nothing to get excited about.
