Thrash/Black Metal is the genre created by some Thrash Metal bans on their early works. SLAYER during "Show No Mercy" and "Hell Awaits" era, DESTRUCTION with "Sentence of Death" and "Infernal Overkill", SODOM with "Obsessed by Cruelty" and "Persecution Mania", and KREATOR with "Endless Pain" and "Pleasure to Kill" are the ones who set the foundations of this genre. Obviously that many bands try to use such elements mixing with other influences. One of them is the veteran trio WITCHTRAP, from Colombia, as can be heard on "Evil Strikes Again".

Besides it's their fifth album, they're fighting into underground since 1992, and their music is a blend of influences from KREATOR and DESTRUCTION, but using the refined technical and melodic insight of METALLICA. Of course their music has a personal insight and a great amount of energy, and show hooking melodies, but their musical potential is greater than they show. It's like they're being entangled by the past, and can't move away from the past formulas. It's not bad, but they're great enough to do things on their way.

Hugo "Witchhammer" Uribe and Carlos "Burning Axe Ripper" Uribe worked on the cover concept, produced the album, and did the recording, mixing and mastering of "Evil Strikes Again". It's a good sonority that the album bears, but not as good as their music really needs. It has that 'need to be like in the 80's need' that is a problem. To sound organic and crude is different to sound poor (especially on the instruments).

But although these words can seem that their musical work isn't good, it's the opposite: they're pretty good, in a way that they can build better music. Songs as "Midnight Rites" (hear this hooking energy, and try to not be hooked by it), "Evil Strikes Again" (very good guitar riffs and arrangements), "The Devil's on the Loose" (some Hardcore influences can be heard, especially on the bass guitar and drums parts), "Dealing with Satan" (another amazing flow of energy, with nasty vocals on old Mille Petrozza's way), "Born to Kill" and the instrumental "Rhyme of the Insane" (a slow paced song where the guitar solos are worthy of being heard) are showing clearly that this trio can create something great that could turn the eyes of Metal fans throughout the world to their music.

For now, "Evil Strikes Again" is a good release, but WITCHTRAP can make things even better. Maybe a better producer could help them to improve things, one as Sacha Laskow (the one that worked with BLACK PESTILENCE).
