Winter's Edge - The Deceivers album cover

After the success of their debut album "The Ferryman's Eyes" WINTER'S EDGE have produced a follow up EP to showcase the talented musicians from various bands. This EP is titled "The Deceivers" and according to the band's Facebook page the EP focuses on the mini stories about individuals deceiving each other in different ways.

For those who don't know WINTER'S EDGE was started up by ambitious musician Jeremy Lawler who decided to start this solo project after playing in several bands, for the past two years he has carefully selected the right musicians for the songs across these two records.

"The Deceivers" gets off to quite a promising start with the song "The Unawkening Tale" where the vocal work between the two vocalists reminds me of very early NIGHTWISH in terms of the vocal work and musical arrangements. The abrupt melody from the keyboards broke that illusion giving them something different from the rest.

From that point on however it seems to me that each sounded similar to the last one, I like a variety in a collection of music and liked to be blown away at the first listen but to be completely honest I wasn't feeling that sort of vibe when listening to the EP. Although saying this song "Unleash The Dragon" does have a very memorable chorus that is sure to be flying around your head for hours on end. It may even become guilty pleasure tune for the metal community.

The highlight for me was the song "Eternity Of Days"; it's quite a strong powerful that combines the beauty of both kinds of vocals very well, containing strong guitar work and the no nonsense drums provide a strong back bone.

This EP provides a very strong follow up to "The Ferryman's Eyes"; it undoubtedly showcases the remarkable talents of some clearly gifted musicians from all over the world and it's put together very well. However there is still room for development in their sound for a special ingredient to give it more zest.
