Winter Deluge - Degradation Renewal album cover

New Zealand as a country is famous for several things, the Kiwi fruit, Rugby League and Union, sheep, wine and the Haka. Not the first country when you think about Black Metal, however here come 5 guys who couldn't care about not being though about firstly, they are here to push themselves up the lists. This is 2nd EP after their first release: Vehement Visions of Nihilism back in 2010. Since then they have released 2 Full-Length Albums: As the Earth Fades into Obscurity and Devolution - Decay in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Let's hear what they have got now for us

"Mass Graves" is a total blend of sound, however it balances out really well with harmonies being created. The vocals are coarse, aggressive and I have no idea what is being said, but they suit the mood of the song. The tempo is high as fuck and works so well from the instrumental perspective in creating an awesome sounding song. Solid start to the album

"Cold War" follows suit as if it were the same song carried on from before, little changes, but at this intensity, who cares? The aggression runs so well through the song, but the amazing sense of balance truly controls the song. You feel like it could be lost at any point, but it is structured brilliantly with the Blackened Death mixing with Thrash elements to make another great song.

"What We Leave Behind" starts off slowly, but this is fooling nobody, we know it will explode. However it goes very experimental in a progressive way before changing into the normal suit of arms. The pulsating melodies create more Black Metal vibes once more, but its still has the new elements thrown in to keep it interesting, the melodies keep churning out beautifully. This feels more Atmospheric Black Metal, it's a great change that allows us to hear what the band can really come out with, smooth move.

"Architects of Extinction" returns to the more Thrash and Death mixes, which is not a bad thing at all. The aggression has returned in full from both instrumentalists and vocals. This clearly plays to the band's strengths more than the previous song. The pulsating melodies send the harmonies into overdrive and makes the song kick into full gear perfectly. The song slows down at the ed, but the harmony in doing so is beautifully executed at that, well played all-round.

"Within the Remnants of Humanity" has a brilliantly technical start, it kicks back to the aggressive Blackness that we have grown to enjoy throughout the album. The aggression never fails to live up to expectation and the song goes through the motions we would expect tom but it is executed perfectly. The experimental technical sides of the melodies are thrown into serious Thrash levels toward the end, but remain well-balanced and brilliant. Solid end to the EP

A cracking EP, full of new ideas, sounds and now expectations for them to live up to, if this EP expands into a full-length album like this, I will love it. Solid effort all round nd perfectly executed. These guys have gone up in my list.
