Gates of Twilight
Wings of Steel
WINGS OF STEEL is a hard rock/heavy metal band founded by vocalist Leo Unnermark and guitarist Parker Halub in 2019. The two met while studying music in Los Angeles and have been working together ever since. Rooted in the old-school hard rock and heavy metal of the 70s and 80s, the band's style could be described as an epic, new, and unique expression of those classic styles. In wake of the release of their debut EP "Wings of Steel" in 2022, the band delivers another ten new tracks on their latest album "Gates of Twilight" independently released May 19, 2023 The lyrics for the most part are written based on universal reflections and speak of the balance between opposites (dark and light, good and bad, heaven and hell, life and death). They journey through various concepts and can thus be related to in multiple ways depending on how the listener wishes to interpret them. The lyrics speak of the importance of the balance between things we love and desire and of the things we are afraid to accept. That's some pretty deep shit, and I was told there would be no homework. So, as I drop the needle down with high hopes that I'll be blown away, both musically and lyrically.
Holy Fuck, forty-five seconds into the opening track "Liar in Love", I'm like.......holy fuck, I'm in heaven, heavy metal heaven, with furious guitar riffs brought to life by the, let me choose my words carefully here, amazing, magnificent, soaring, grandeur vocals of Leo Unnermark. If this is any indication of what's to follow in the next nine songs, I may never take it off the turntable.
"Fall in Line" hits on all cylinders again with head numbing riffs and backbeat, merged splendidly by the powerful and explosive vocals. Just a brief description of a few more songs because I can't wait to get my final assessment of how blown away I am of WINGS OF STEEL. Slower paced, melodic bluesy, funky tempo on "Garden of Eden", a playful tease with full force guitar licks on "Cry of the Damned", with absolute intense, passionate vocals, and chilling, poignant guitar works that blasts into orbit midway through highlight the power ballad "She Cries", a creeping, galloping tempo with simmering guitar fretwork and bombastic riffs on "Lady of the Lost", the album ends with "Into the Sun", and I will describe it with a single word Sinister.
I have not been in such awe of a band and album this much in a long, long time.
I can guarantee that this will be my favorite album of the year. I was floored by the absolute sky-high vocals of Leo Unnermark and his broad range enhanced by masterful guitar wizardry of Parker Halub. Every single song on "Gates of Twilight" are incredible and captivating and deliver a massive sound experience. I could easily compare this band to some great heavy metal bands, but that would do an injustice to WINGS OF STEEL, as they have created a masterpiece with this album and nothing should take away from that. If I could give them a higher review grade than 10, I would, they are that good. I will climb the highest mountain to spread the word about this exquisite band. I have no idea how they are not on a major record label.
