This is the first full-length offering from the Finnish Black Metal band. They added the first song off of their 2014 EP onto this album. It's pretty much the same song but a bit more mastered. To 'distinguish' them from a number of other bands in the genres, they are about as raw as Black Metal gets. There is nothing fancy to what they are doing, it's minimalist but it's serves its purpose nonetheless.
They appear on Werewolf Records, an old school label focusing on Black Metal bands, they have a number of bands that have a cult following like GOATMOON and SATANIC WARMASTER. Little known bands that have garnered a lot of interest in Europe in the Black Metal scene. You don't need a huge label to have an impact, even if it's minor. The Black Metal scene has been flourishing more or less because of the new and more traditional bands but also because of Post-Black Metal scene that has garnered a lot of buzz in the last few years.
They definitely stick to the basis, the old-school imagery, the spikes, the inverted crosses and the blasphemy of religion and it's impact on human kind. They don't shy away from talking about their absolute hate of deity and whatever it involves. You will never equal the early DARKTHRONE albums but they definitely were inspired by the forefathers of the genre. Most riffs I already heard before from the various Black Metal bands, there is no real innovation here. You have the deep and dark ambience, most notably on the second song ''Immortal Hunter of the Moon''.
It has that imagery, that Black Metal imagery. I don't really mind it; I always thought the presence and mood of the songs in the genre were the most symbolic. I am not a fan of screeches and high pitched voices, and I definitely try to concentrate on the structure of the song and what it makes you feel. I guess a song, or an album, can make you feel a lot of emotions and whatnot. As for me, when I listen to Black Metal bands, I am not concentrating on the voice of the singer, but the overall perception of the song. I thought they did a good job setting the tone of the album with the opening song. I would have left off the 6th song just because of subject matter but nonetheless, they stick to their guns and deliver on all fronts. Minimalist production but at it's core, it's still decent. Nothing fancy, nothing overdramatic, just pure Black Metal. They are not here to reinvent the genre, they just continue the legacy of a genre that has had it's better days.
A good solid organic effort for a first full-length release.
