Beneath the Surface
Weapon of Pride
Genres labels can confuse the fans more than enlighten something, because the more attached to labels, harder becomes to understand that conceptions on music can’t contain everything a band can do. Some new ideas on older models can’t change the genres’ labels. This can be applied to what is heard on “Beneath the Surface”, the new album of the Phoenix-based trio WEAPON OF PRIDE. The sonority depicted on the album seeks to be clean and defined, but allowing the instrumental tunes to be rough, distorted and intense. It means that it’s not hard to understand what is being played by the band; on the other hand, it’s nasty and aggressive, with a ‘greasy’ touch. And what great artwork, indeed.
Their music walks in a midway between Groove Meal (the reason for the ‘greasy’ touch on their music), Stoner Metal and Stoner Rock, but there’s a savage and younger set of melodic hooks on their music that aren’t usual for such genres (that are usually something more into an older form). It means that their music bears a strong personality and it’s not restricted by limits or boundaries; but it’s adorned with charming and hooking melodies, and instrumental arrangements as well. The vocals can evolve a bit more (they’re good, but can be better, and it’s a tip).
10 very good songs are offered by the trio, and it’s not hard to become entangled by the appeal of “Axeman”, “Priestess”, “Carni”, “Wrath”, “Siren”, “Floating”, “Shredder”, “Awaken”, “Temptation” and “Into the Storm”, because the band evades a technical exaggerated approach on its music, with preference for a greasy and hooking appeal on the songs. It’s to hear and to like it for sure.
“Beneath the Surface” is just their second full-length, which means that there are more of their talent hidden ‘beneath the surface’ (sorry for the joke, please). So higher expectations can be laid on WEAPON OF PRIDE in the future.
