We Are The Damned - Doomvirate album cover

WE ARE THE DAMNED are a band "not from around" that classify their style as "Metal Black."  Not much information was able to be garnered on them.  To date they have released two EPs and two full-length albums.  "Doomvirate" is their fifth studio offering.

"Ghastly Humans" opens the album, in grandiose fashion.  I was not prepared for the instrumental onslaught, or images of the macabre it immediately conjured up in my mind.  The pace is a relentless, full on assault.  I suppose at its basic level it is Black Metal, but with a nearly equal part of Thrash Metal thrown in as well.  The connections in the passages are done tightly, like a metal fitting being slammed into a casing.

"Dreams Under Surveillance" continues the frenzied speed.  Vocally there is a balance between the high, screechy vocals-fry technique, and some lower, more growled parts.  Blast beats fuel the fast picking guitar parts and there is no room to try to stop and take in what you are hearing.  It is an unstoppable advancing storm on your senses.  "Revealing Morality" is a bit slower, with a grinding rhythm, but the vocals continue to dominate the sound, with dark, brooding evil.  Every riff and passage seems to be there solely for the purpose of a feeling of atrociousness.

"Rain of Spikes" sees the song structure and sound continue forward.  There is no denying the band's musicianship or effort.  Indeed, they play well together, maintaining a connectedness throughout some impossibly fast passages and riff and meter changes, like in the track "Imposter."  A powerful mid-song sort of breakdown drives the point home.  "The Threshold" might be the most biting and brutal track on the album.  It is a shorter track, ending in a breakdown that last nearly half of the length of the track.  But the riff is kept simple and a bit more discernable.

As we hit the seventh track, "Macabre Expedition" brings us back to the earlier part of the album, with another furiously executed display of speed pandemonium.  "Angelsick" runs in the same way.  Closing the album is "Flight of the Phoenix," which comes at you like a rebel army advancing over the battlefield.  Overall I cannot question the integrity and style of the band, or the product that they have crafted.  Fans looking for fast, furious, uncompromising aggression will surely find this to their liking.  Anyone expecting to be surprised a bit from one track to the next however might not.
