Warlust - Unearthing Shattered Philosophies album cover

WARLUST is a 4-Piece Blackened Thrash Metal band from Hesse, Germany. This is their second full-length album and first since 2017's ''Morbid Execution''. They did however tour extensively for their previous opus and released a live album the same year. They are another Thrash Metal band from Germany, one of the hot beds of the genre but they added the Black Metal elements to really stand out in the massive crowd.

I don't really hear the Thrash Metal stylings though, I am perplexed by the description of the band on various websites. I would definitely consider them as Blackened Death Metal without a shadow of a doubt. The vocals are on point and you have those unique Black Metal growls and shrieks like in any other band in the genre. You definitely cannot surpass bands like MARDUK or BEHEMOTH, those titans pretty much can't be touched but you an hear the various influences of these bands on this release. It's an interesting effort from an unknown band trying to make their mark. It's not completely void of new ideas nonetheless but it definitely does sound exactly like so many bands out there.

I felt the drums sounded a bit wonky at best. They sounded a bit raw to say the least. I know that the genre (well Black Metal though) has minimalist drum mixes and they want to keep it at the bare minimum but I felt the lack of real sound of the instrument was a detriment to the rest of the band. It really hurt the overall value and production could have been more thought out to be honest. The rest of the albums seem to be mixed together fine but it sounded chaotic at best at times.

As for musically, I guess with the constant blast beats and generic Black Metal riffs, it definitely sounds overdone. They don't stray away from the path yet there is no real direction to this album. You do have countless melodic riffs and a very frenetic pace but it lacks character. It falls short of expectations but it's still enjoyable to fans of the genre. It's not going to win any records but it's a pretty good frenzy of madness.
