The Giant's Dream
Warcoe
WARCOE is "a band that hails from Italy and is well-versed in the most ancient ways of Doom Metal. Although they dwell in the darkness, they aren't afraid to kick into a hard rocking groove when the situation calls for it. Influenced by a variety of heavy metal progenitors, the three-piece got together in 2021 and dubbed their sound "groovy doom from the abyss" for reasons that become apparent upon hearing it. "The Giant's Dream" has come to fruition and is now ready to cast a long shadow over listeners' hearts." The album contains eight tracks.
The title track is the first cut. They talked about BLACK SABBATH a bit in the opening bio, and man this is exactly how this sounds. The riffs are almost a carbon copy, and the vocalist sound a lot like early Ozzy. The bass player even mimics Geezer Butler. Unfortunately, who needs another BLACK SABBATH in 2022? "Cats Will Follow" is a slower, more lumbering song with plenty of Doom along with the semi-energetic riff. The band puts a little more of their personality into this song, but I feel like I am back in the early 70's again. "Omega Sunrise" is a shorter song with acoustic guitars but still that bleak outlook weights heavy.
"Fire and Snow" is a groovy little jaunt into the lighter side of the genre...that is, until the main riff drops, heavy and somewhat mysterious. Forget the lighter side...this song is full of darkness. "Winternaut" is slower and even darker, beginning with a heavy sequence of molten lava hardening following a journey out of the volcano. This song breaks backs and stiffens necks. "Thieves, Heretics, and Whores" is another smooth and groovy number that drips with Doomy elements. But at this point in the album, the band should have established their own personality, and they really haven't.
"Scars Will Remain" is another slow track very similar to old BLACK SABBATH. It slows after the half-way mark, taking a pause and seguing into a slightly different riff. "Church of Void" closes the album. I'm not sure how much simpler the band could get if they tried. Overall, this was sadly a copycat album of early BLACK SABBATH, with very little of the band's personality injected into the music. As such, it faltered even before the first note. I maintain my stance to thoroughly question why any band would want to sound exactly like another from ages ago that already wrote all of these riffs. Hmmm?
