Waking Into Nightmares is WARBRINGER's follow up to their debut War Without End and on their return to the Metal underground they bring with them 11 tracks that sound like they were constructed within the very lungs of hell and unleashed upon the world to cause war and destruction... well that may be a little bit of an over-the-top description, but it wouldn't be far off!
WARBRINGER have returned with their brand of fast, high octane, high intensity, rough Thrash Metal which I am sure will satisfy all lovers of this genre. The first noticeable thing about Waking Into Nightmares is the production of the album, while its rough around the edges it really puts the raw power that this band offers into focus. Gary Holt (EXODUS Guitarist) has done a great job producing the album while everything sounds clear and the all the instruments have a great mix. It isn't hard to imagine these songs being used as a soundtrack to modern war movies.
The superb thing about WARBRINGER is that while they sound familiar, it sound oh-so fresh. Imagine all of those bands from the 80's you loved and all the cool breakdown riffs you wish had been extended just a little bit longer. Well that's what you get here. Each riff is a huge monster and just when you think there is no way they can make you again want to mosh, they somehow manage it. The guitar work is huge, the energy levels are massive, tempos explore different ways to delivering the final musical deathblow and this creates a great musical, Thrash experience. In your mind you know the structure of these Thrash songs that isn't changed from the norm; however its how they go about progressing over these structures and that's impressive.
The lead guitar work is also top-notch; full of shredding but also retaining a decent amount of melody and structure, something that can (and has) been lost with all the Kerry King copy cats of The thrash scene revival. There are some very skilled musicians in this band and they are putting everything to the max. The singing is also more than worthy to mention; John Kevill's vocals are so intense that -yes- at times they do become a bit grating, but they sound like an American take on ONSLAUGHT'S singer Sy Keeler, they are distinct, hellish (in an awesome way) and so raw that they could potentially make you run home for mommy! Some of the best in the Thrash revival, no doubt.
WARBRINGER have again produced a class album that shows how and why they are ruling the nowadays American Thrash Metal revived scene. The only complaint I could possibly make for this album is that at times it can become a little repetitive; but the way the vocal hooks 'activate' the next riff in the song, giving a new jolt of energy each time the song takes a new direction, really is something that needs to be heard by all Thrash fans; it's a technique that works very effectively - but not a lot of bands have executed it well. From the opening track to the closer this is an album that should not be missed. WARBRINGER have stirred up a war with this beast, and with a massive American and European tour just beginning I can only imagine an army of thrashers are awaiting the chance to go to battle... battle in the pit that is!
