Vulnificus - Invocation album cover

Today, due the economic changes in the matter of selling music (physical media is not as popular as digital media), there are many tendencies to use simple releases instead of whole albums. They have an advantage: they time for composing and recording is shorter and allows the bands to tour in the same way. This is one of the many reasons behind this phenomenon, and can explain why the North American duet VULNIFICUS is releasing another EP, "Invocation", instead of a full length.

Their musical work is based on a traditional form of what is called Brutal Death Metal, or in other words, the mix between extremely low tuned grunts with low-tuned instruments. Their music shows contrasts between fast moments with slow parts, what means that is an inheritance of names as MORTICIAN, EXHUMED, SUFFOCATION and CANNIBAL CORPSE. As a young band, they still have to mature their ideas in a better and personal way, but they're on the right path. As their musical work is based on a traditional form (that seems like they're not interesting in renewing the genre in any way), the recording is that same one used by many bands: crude and organic, but allowing the fan to understand what's being expressed. The tunes could be better (especially on the drums), but it's a good result in the end of all.

After an intro, "The Viral Virus" comes showing contrasts between slow paced tempos with fast drumming (in a similar way to CANNIBAL CORPSE in many moments), being followed by "Coerced into Compliance", where some technical parts of bass guitar can be heard clear in the middle of the rhythmic shifts. "Instruments of Indiscrimination" is a good instrumental song, being followed by the bonecrushing brutality of "Instigated Indignation", with very good low grunts and snarls from the vocals (and that shows some Old School Grindcore elements). And "The Incredulous Invocation" is a drilling song with fast and abrasive tempos.

The band can dare a bit more to mature their musical work. But "Invocation" is showing that VULNIFICUS came to stay.
