Last Call For Rock 'n' Roll

HighWay

You won’t find any weird turns and breaks here, and you certainly won’t find any high-brow lyrics being written or difficult words being sung. Nope, this is as straight as an arrow, but with all kinds of directions being used where fitting or needed.

If you're looking for a band that will give you a varied hour of music that spans from sweet Hard Rock up and until a bit of Thrash Metal, then you can do a lot worse than the French version of HIGHWAY. Having been around for more than 25 years, they have just released their sixth piece of slab to date which they named "Last Call For Rock 'n' Roll".  Their main influences are withing the Heavy and Hard Rocking areas, where the Power needs to be met with Melody and danceability, with GUNS 'N ROSES as the biggest supplier. As this is my first time even listening to any of their albums, it was quite a surprise to be able to derive what these guys are looking to achieve musically. The first listen wasn't too positive, as I felt that the band was just all over the place. Only when I listened for the second time did I start to get what HIGHWAY is trying to achieve with "Last Call For Rock 'n' Roll".

It turns out they are just attempting to make you have a good time with their music, just by keeping it all simple and straight forward. You won't find any weird turns and breaks here, and you certainly won't find any high-brow lyrics being written or difficult words being sung. Nope, this is as straight as an arrow, but with all kinds of directions being used where fitting or needed. That works as long as HIGHWAY decides to play at a pace, not to go too slow. When they do that, "Last Call For Rock 'n' Roll" just doesn't very convincing. Good example is the least song on the album "¡Bang Bang!". Vocally you have a split between the songs where Benjamin Folch sings in his clean voice. He is a good singer, but his pronunciation of the English language just leave some area to be desired.

On the other hand, when he adds a bit of gravel to his voice, he sounds like a Dave Mustaine who actually can sing. Best examples of this are the very powerful "Action", but even better, the MEGADETH inspired song "Let Me". You might not think so at the beginning, but just listen to the whole song, and you will hear what I mean. What I'm trying to say with this review is that you really need to listen to what HIGHWAY does on "Last Call For Rock 'n' Roll" in its entirety before deciding what they do is to your taste.
