Vokonis - Grasping Time album cover

From their Facebook page, "The heavy prog-metal-trio, VOKONIS, is here to daze you with their furious sludge-vibe and melodic passages. Drenched in blasting distortion, melody, and menace, VOKONIS is ready to fully blossom as the progressive beast they've held within since 2015. With a style that ranges from the heavy riffage and vocals of heavy bands such as BARONESS to utterly clean PINK FLOYD soundscapes, they aim to completely immerse you in their songwriting. As you share a psychedelic and thrilling journey VOKINIS will have shown their range from full-blown doom to melodically blissful passages."

"Antler Queen" opens with a hard and heavy riff and some guitar dissonance. The vocals are sung ala Stoner style...in one frequency and shouted. The riff ventures out a bit here and there, but there are not many Progressive elements easily noticeable. I would call this Sludge Metal/Stoner Metal. It slows to a grind after the half-way mark, and then picks back up through the end. "Sunless Hymnal" is a near ten-minute beast, opening with a clean guitar sequence and pensive vocals. It slowly gathers steam until the main riff comes in, crushing and lumbering. The shouted vocals come back into play. A guitar solo also makes an entrance, with plenty of wah-wah.

"I Hear the Siren" is a shorter and faster piece. But then it settles into a slow groove, with emotional vocals. It picks back up towards the end...with a single word repeated over and over in agony (burn?). "Exiled" is a short two-minute instrumental, featuring a steady drum beat and some lead guitars. "Ashes" is also two minutes in length. A bit peculiar that there are two of these in a row. I am not sure what the purpose is, but it sounds like the other song, but with more energy in the riffs. "Embers" is eight minutes in length. Coming at you slowly and cautiously at first, like a mist creeping down a dark road. Then the main riff drops. It's weighted and punishing. The vocals come back to the shouted single frequency again. A little melody breathes in.

"Grasping Time" is a four-minute track. It follows two main riffs along the way, and has a somewhat depressing sound, as the title might suggest. "Fading Lights" is a five-minute closer. It opens softly, with slow vocal moans and clean guitars in a slow pace. It picks up, with an extended guitar solo and shouted vocals, some harsh at times. Overall, I enjoyed the album. It reminded me of the Desert Prog Rockers WITH OUR ARMS TO THE SUN, sans the Progressive elements. At its core, it is Doom/Stoner/Sludge Metal, but this Prog Snob did not here many Progressive elements at all. But that is neither here nor there. For the style, it was pretty good.
