Viles Vitae - IV album cover

I haven't heard much bands from Portugal to be perfectly honest to you guys. I think the only band I know from that country is the legendary MOONSPELL. Other than that, well you don't hear a lot of bands coming from that part of the world. Not much is known about this band, they don't have an official website and there is sparse information on their Facebook page. As for any clips of the band, I chose some drum cam footage recorded when they did this very album. Most of the stuff I saw on Youtube were only links to listen to this EP.

This is Black Metal in its truest form. The vocals are what you could expect from the genre evidently. The production did surprise me, it was actually pretty good and the vocals seem to be a bit in the background and not the forefront of the songs off of this EP. There is nothing wrong about that and they essentially want to create an aura on each song. You have some pretty wicked intros, I got to admit I really loved the crackling fire in the beginning of ''Sunless Redeemer''. I can say the same thing about the distant thunderstorm we hear at the beginning of ''Source Life Extinction''. I think Black Metal is very much about imagery and mysticism, alongside the overall feeling of each song.

The songwriting is fine, nothing mindboggling. The lyrics are very much in the mood of the songs, there is no real rhyme or reason but it's suits its purpose. As for the vocalist, he does a good job and he stays true to the genre. I was never a fan of the Black Metal voice but I can deal with it much better than in past years. It reminded me a lot of the Black Metal scene in the last 90's and early 2000's, stuff I listened to on Knuckletracks compilations back in the day. It's basic Black Metal but i thought the production was better than back in the day. The Double-Bass Drum on ''Theory of Deconstruction'' is pretty awesome and they really finished on a high note.

They are part of the underground Metal scene in Portugal according to the information I was able to gather. I don't know if its a huge scene but for a first effort, I think they did a masterful job. It's not gonna reinvent the wheel or the genre, let's be honest, it's not easy to innovate in a stale genre. Stale might not be word I would like to use, I would say it's pretty much at crossroads. I would love to see something just burst on the scene and make the genre a bit more relevant. Nonetheless, VILES VITAE does a great job with their first offering, delivering an old school Black Metal album with no frills.
